“I love the people I work with, the variety of work, the challenges, the new initiatives, the opportunities, being based on a fantastic campus, did I mention the people??”
How did you come to work at WEG?
I studied at Warwick University in the 1990s and when I graduated I decided to work for a year in order to save up to go travelling. Whilst looking for temp jobs I came across the newly launched Unitemps service based on campus and managed to secure a part-time, two week role covering the person who was running Unitemps whilst they went on holiday. Fortunately for me, this person never returned from their holiday so I stayed on in the job for a year, during which time the role grew to a full-time managerial position and by the time I left for my travels Unitemps was fully established and I had gained experience in starting up a new business, placing temps, creating marketing materials, liaising with payroll, resolving complaints and building business with local external companies. When I came back from travelling I got a temp role with jobs.ac.uk working on a new project and this grew into a permanent managerial role with the company. 5 years ago WEG was created and I was asked to work in a Compliance and Operations role across all of the WEG businesses.
What do you like about working here?
I love the people I work with, the variety of work, the challenges, the new initiatives, the opportunities, being based on a fantastic campus, did I mention the people??
What opportunities has it given you?
I have been very fortunate to have worked with a number of our businesses as they started up so I have been involved with lots of different aspects from operations, sales, marketing, legal, compliance and HR issues so I have gained many skills and experiences. I have also had lots of training opportunities, both work and personal (I learnt Spanish for 2 years at the Language Centre and have been on various yoga courses using my WLA vouchers). Working with WEG has enabled me to meet lots of different people around the university as I have needed to liaise with lots of other departments at various times. It has also given me the opportunity to have a good work/life balance – I have four children so the ability to work part time whilst still doing a job I love has been amazing.
What would you say to others thinking about working at WEG?
It’s a great place to work; the people are friendly and inclusive and there are lots of opportunities to shine and develop your skills, knowledge and experience. I’ve worked for WEG businesses for 19 years and I still love it here!
