Warwick's campus is a busy estate. It includes teaching buildings, labs, accommodation, sports facilities, roads and public spaces, and thousands of people use them every day. Our Estates Maintenance team keeps it all safe and open, and we're looking for a skilled, versatile Builder to join the Building Fabric team.
You'll pick up reactive and planned maintenance jobs through our job notification system and resolve them safely, efficiently and to standard within target SLAs. No two days are the same. One morning you might be making safe loose tiles or a collapsed inspection chamber lid, and that afternoon you might be on a brickwork or plastering job.
What you'll be doing
- Responding to emergency and general requests, such as dangerous tiles, uneven paving, damaged chamber lids, and blocked drains and road gullies
- General brickwork for new builds and repairs, including setting out and transferring levels
- Plastering and repairs to walls, ceilings and coving, plus wall and floor tiling
- Repairing and maintaining underground drainage, including new pipe runs and setting falls to building regulations
- Concrete paving and hard landscaping repairs, and replacing bollards and barriers
- Minor roofing and gutter repairs, sealant and weatherproofing, and painting and decorating
- Diagnosing problems, assessing time, equipment and cost, and escalating where specialist help is needed
- Working safely through risk assessments, method statements, permits, the correct PPE, and asbestos and fire record drawings
- Ordering materials, keeping accurate records and timesheets, and driving University vehicles around campus
About you
- An apprenticeship background, equivalent training, or significant practical experience in the building services industry
- Experience handling a high volume of reactive jobs and organising your own workload with minimal supervision
- A natural problem-solver who uses their initiative and knows when to escalate
- Safe use of hydraulic/manual lifting platforms and erection of mobile tower scaffolding
- Confined space entry using emergency escape breathing apparatus
- Asbestos awareness, including non-licensed removal works
- Up-to-date knowledge of building regulations and materials, so you specify the right product for the job
- Experience of planned preventative maintenance systems
- A good team player with strong customer service skills and the IT skills to keep records up to date
- Comfortable with manual work, lifting up to 25kg and working at height
It would be great if you also hold a full, clean UK (or EU equivalent) driving licence and a City & Guilds/NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant construction subject.
Don't yet meet every skill and competency for the role? If you have the aptitude to complete them within your first year, we'd still like to hear from you.
Why Warwick
You'll join a world-class university on one of the UK's largest single-site campuses, working alongside a supportive team of trades colleagues. In return, you'll get generous annual leave, a strong pension scheme and access to a wide range of staff benefits.
